Agricultural postsecondary occupational programs have been a part of higher education for more than a century. The programs have gradually shifted from four-year institutions to junior, community, and technical colleges. The extant literature related to curriculum, faculty, and students associated with these programs is scant. Consequently, a descriptive and nationally oriented survey was conducted to identify profile characteristics. Analysis revealed commonality among the various types of agricultural occupational programs. Further, several characteristics were identified that appeared to be consistent with other postsecondary occupational programs. Likewise, characteristics were identified that set the programs apart and made them unique. Perhaps the most startling finding was that these programs were begun and have operated without the benefit of an organized professional development system. |
