WORK VALUES OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE MID-LIFE ADULTS

Titel: WORK VALUES OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE MID-LIFE ADULTS
Auteur: Morse, Edwin B.
Verschenen in: Community college journal of research and practice
Paginering: Jaargang 3 (1978) nr. 1 pagina's 37-44
Jaar: 1978
Inhoud: The increasing enrollment of mid-life adults in the nation's comprehensive community colleges has stimulated a widespread interest in the characteristics of an older, nontraditional clientele. One area of concern is the work values of mid-life students and the implications of these values for counseling services in the community college. It was found in a study of part-time and full-time, mid-life students (ages 35-55) enrolled at a comprehensive community college in Virginia that intrinsic work values were of primary importance. A work role allowing for achievement, creativity, and intellectual stimulation was of greater value to all mid-life groups, except nonwhites, than extrinsic values emphasizing economic returns, security, and work associates. Counselors working with mid-life adults need to be cognizant of the work values hierarchy of their clients and be able to integrate work value priorities and interrelationships into an effective job/career decision-making process.
