A study was conducted comparing Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) and lecture approaches using 301 community college students. Results indicate that students in a PSI class do not perform better than students using a traditional lecture method. However, when classes are compared on material learned early in the course, the PSI classes scored significantly higher than lecture. PSI students appear to diminish on more recent material PSI students estimated themselves to be studying more while lecture classes reported more personal satisfaction due to class interaction. Class interaction appeared to be an important factor in learning by PSI. Age may also affect how well a student does in a PSI or lecture approach. A post hoc comparison indicated that the number of students succeeding in PSI was significantly less than lecture. |
