Inhoud: Southwestern Community College in rural Western North Carolina has forged partnerships with public schools, other colleges, community-based organizations, and the neighboring regional university. These partnerships have been the result of proactive investments of time, energy, and resources to improve the lives of young people in the region. Successful collaborative efforts are based on four elements: (1) supportive college culture; (2) long-term, meaningful partnerships; (3) solid resource development strategies; and (4) well-cultivated, creative project ideas. Sound fundraising practices such as project development processes, identification and cultivation of funders, matching resource needs with funder interests, thematic approaches to creating compelling cases, and regularly leveraging one initiative for another have caused unprecedented success. The college's vision has set the stage for several successful collaborative projects - resulting in the acquisition of over $15 million in external grant funds in a four-year period by the college and its partners. Supported by the leadership role taken by the Institutional Advancement Division, collaborative project and resource development has become one of the hallmarks of the institution. The key elements of facilitation, integration, and activation create a framework for implementing the college vision through the mechanisms of strategic, tactical, operational, interpersonal, and cultural integration.
