OKLAHOMA'S PUBLIC 2-YEAR COLLEGES: GENESIS AND DESTINY

Titel: OKLAHOMA'S PUBLIC 2-YEAR COLLEGES: GENESIS AND DESTINY
Auteur: Cook, James J.
Verschenen in: Community college journal of research and practice
Paginering: Jaargang 20 (1996) nr. 6 pagina's 557-573
Jaar: 1996-11
Inhoud: Oklahoma's public 2-year colleges originated from the public's belief in educational democracy. The crash of the oil industry in the mid-1980s and the negative effects of the downturn in the national economy during the past decade, however, have called into question whether the state can afford its historical commitment to educational access. Oklahoma's 152-year institutions have been responding to wave after wave of restructuring and reform initiatives since 1987. Having met the initial demands for change with innovative practices and internal reallocation efforts, the 2-year colleges now face a second major wave of critical inspection by diverse groups. This article details the proactive responses that either have been or that currently are being pursued by the state's community colleges to successfully meet the challenges of diminishing funding and increasing demands for quality, efficiency, and accountability.
