Inhoud: A General Educational Development (GED) certificate opens community college doors to people who would not otherwise enter them. However, a question is sometimes raised concerning GED holders' achievements in higher education: Are they comparable to those of high school graduates? The records of 5,616 GED holders who had enrolled in a large, midwestern community college over a 23-year period were examined to respond to the question. Although one fourth of the GED holders failed to earn any college credits, those who did do so achieved passing grades on the average. The GED holders enrolled in a variety of courses and graduated in proportions similar to the college as a whole, with women generally outperforming men. The academic work of GED holders was thus found to be comparable to that of high school graduates in this college setting.
