Inhoud: Shortfalls in science and engineering doctorate production among American citizens are alarming. Also alarming is that birth rate declines preclude amelioration of these shortfalls by recruiting more doctoral starts from the usual sources. The National Science Foundation has concluded that more minorities must be included among doctoral starts, and that many of these individuals must come from junior and community colleges. This study developed basic data on minorities with junior and community college (JUCO) backgrounds who went on to earn doctorates in science and engineering over a 10-year period. These data were compared with data for all science and engineering doctorate recipients for the same period. For the most part, they were quite comparable. Sizable differences were found for age at doctorate completion and in major fields of the recipients. Sources of support for doctoral study and father's education were significant predictors of elapsed time from baccalaureate to doctorate. The National Science Foundation has mounted a Minority Initiative designed to increase production of minority science and engineering doctorate recipients. Junior and community colleges will comprise an important aspect of this initiative. Leadership in these institutions would help America greatly if it used the number of minorities in this sample (N=530) as a benchmark and determined that the number will be greater in the future.
