Variables from the college choice literature are examined in an analysis of the reasons students give for migrating from a city community college district to suburban district community colleges. A secondary analysis used a questionnaire survey administered to students at 3 suburban campuses (N = 1,868). Large numbers of students migrated. Previous research reports of the importance of proximity and low importance of academic quality for college choices were contradicted by this study's findings. The migrating students rated their specific courses and other academic issues as the most important factors in their choice of a suburban college. Safety was of moderate importance and proximity was of less importance. Although this student migration had been described by some as “white flight,” there was substantial movement and similar attitudes by all major ethnic groups. The suggestion is made that stratification may explain these migrations along with racial conflict. Previous college choice research has conceptually treated community colleges as undifferentiated. However, the findings suggest the distinctiveness of various community colleges in a metropolis and the significance of academic quality in recruitment. |
