We assessed the effects of role ambiguity, role conflict, and 10 job satisfaction factors on propensity to leave for community college faculty located in the 11 southern states served by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Data were gathered through the administration of a survey instrument that was mailed to 900 randomly selected faculty in April 1989. Four hundred sixty-five questionnaires were returned. We used the stepwise multiple regression procedure to analyze the data. The community college faculty in this sample were generally satisfied with their work. Although propensity to leave was not a widely held attitude, it was influenced by some, but not all, job satisfaction factors. As satisfaction with growth opportunities, salary, the work itself, policy and administration, and supervision decreased, propensity to leave increased. In addition, propensity to leave was influenced by role conflict to a greater extent than by role ambiguity. The relationship between role conflict and propensity to leave was positive; as role conflict increased propensity to leave increased. The five statistically significant satisfaction factors and role conflict accounted for 40.5% of the adjusted variance. Demographic variables, other than age, did not significantly influence propensity to leave.
