USE OF A COMPETENCY-BASED COURSE SYLLABUS AND ITS EFFECTS ON STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN INTRODUCTORY COMPUTER COURSES

Titel: USE OF A COMPETENCY-BASED COURSE SYLLABUS AND ITS EFFECTS ON STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN INTRODUCTORY COMPUTER COURSES
Auteur: Kern, Ronald P.
Verschenen in: Community college journal of research and practice
Paginering: Jaargang 14 (1990) nr. 2 pagina's 115-122
Jaar: 1990-04
Inhoud: The development of competency-based instruction is increasing as regional and state pressures for accountability and evidence of “institutional effectiveness” increase. This study examined a group of Introduction to Computers classes in which the major change in the delivery system was the use of a competency-based syllabus. Summer 1988 classes were grouped and compared with summer 198 9 classes. Fall 1988 classes were grouped and compared with fall 1989 classes. The data indicate that student performance does not vary significantly in Summer classes, whose membership is dominated by “reverse transfer” students from senior institutions. The fall class scores, whose members are much more typical of the community college student, vary significantly (p < .05). Also, implications for non-productive completion and withdrawal rates are discussed.
