This study compared the academic performance of three categories of male student athletes (basketball, football, and baseball players) who had 2-year college transfer credit with a) their later performance at a four year institution, and b) with student athletes with no transfer credits. Transcripts of 78 student-athletes (40 with 2-year credit) were analyzed for distribution of credits and achievement, by academic department. For all three categories of student-athletes, Physical Education Departments ranked first as a source of credits. They accounted for 26% of the total 2-year college credits for basketball players, 39% for football players, and 18% for baseball players (for an across sport average of 28%). Moreover, grades earned in PE at 2-year institutions were 1.2 points higher on average than the average grade for all other credits. The athletes with transfer credit continued to enroll in a substantial number of PE courses (20%, 24% and 29% of total credits for basketball, football, and baseball respectively) after arrival at the four-year institution. It was recommended that faculty at 2-year colleges undertake studies of their student-athletes' coursework, and that the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges conduct similar studies. Two-year colleges appear destined to become increasingly important components in the athletic industry of big time sport universities.
