In part 2 of this article the authors discuss the statistical significance of demographic and institutional variables for collective bargaining outcomes measured by the strength of particular contractual clauses. Predictors of bargaining outcomes in the areas of long range planning, retrenchment, appointment, promotion, nonrenewal and tenure are discussed. Fourteen independent variables were tested. The sample included approximately 63 percent (n=184) of all faculty agreements in existence at two-year institutions as of 1987. Overall, the authors discerned that the demographic and institutional variables studied were statistically significant for negotiated outcomes. In fact, in all or most instances, a faculty union's ability to represent its membership is strongly related to region, institutional size, age of bargaining relationship, bargaining agent and level of compensation. The ability of “management” to safeguard traditional administrative prerogatives is also significantly related to such structural factors.
