DEVELOPMENT OF TESTING PROCEDURES AND CRITERION LEVELS TO SUPPORT AN ARTICULATION PROGRAM IN A COMMUNITY COLLEGE SETTING

Titel: DEVELOPMENT OF TESTING PROCEDURES AND CRITERION LEVELS TO SUPPORT AN ARTICULATION PROGRAM IN A COMMUNITY COLLEGE SETTING

Inhoud: The concept that stands out most prominently as a result of this research is the importance of setting objective guidelines that can be universally applied to all articulating students. If the critera for advanced placement is clearly defined and the measure appears fair it will probably be accepted more readily by those articulating. However, in addition to being objective the criteria must also be valid. The chance of developing a perfect test program on the first try is minumal, especially if some of the tests were constructed in-house. Any testing strategy should be constantly monitored for reliability and validity. Another consideration is length of testing. Obviously, adequate information can not be obtained if the testing session is less than an hour, but on the other hand a six hour session may result in fatique and correspondingly deflated scores. Therefore, material should be statistically examined for overlap and any overlapping material condensed. Although the development of criteria for advance standing may initially sound simple, that is not the case. Development of valid critria is a difficult undertaking that can have a major impact upon both the articulation program and the students involved in that program. Great care should be exercised to assure that the students are treated fairly because if the students do not have reasonable expectations concerning their opportunity for success they may not elect to pursue the articulation process at all.
