  NONCOMPLETERS/SUCCESSFUL LEAVERS

Titel: NONCOMPLETERS/SUCCESSFUL LEAVERS

Jaar: 1986
Inhoud: Given the large number of community college students that exhibit irregular enrollment patterns, educators need to be more aware of the expectations students hold when enrolling in college and the reasons students choose to leave before program completion. This study reports data on the relationship among student intentions at entrance, satisfactions with the college experience and their reasons for leaving. The sample includes students from ten colleges in New York State who were academically eligible to continue but left before completing their program. Few non-completers can be viewed as successful leavers if success is defined as accomplishing their goals held at enrollment. Many leavers, however, plan to return to the same college in the near future. The data suggest that perhaps half of the leavers are prime targets for retention programs since dissatisfaction with the college experience was related to the decision to leave, rather than external factors such as family, health or financial problems.
