This paper considers certain probabilities associated with selecting the most and the least likely multinomial events under uncertainty. The analysis is based upon the assumption that the random multinomial parametric vector is distributed as a Dirichlet-type 1 distribution. It is shown that the probability that a given event is the most or the least likely event, posterior (prior) to sample information, can be expressed as a Dirichlet-type 2 integral. In this form, numerical values for these probabilities can be obtained from the tables of the incomplete Dirichlet-type 2 integral compiled by Sobel, Uppuluri and Frankowski (1985). It is also shown that the results of this paper are useful in the probabilistic analysis of arbitrary event trees using continuous random variables. |
