Descriptions are given of some probability models that use the bivariate normal distribution. These examples are taken from the health sciences, in contrast to the classical applications of the bivariate normal, which are mainly in the physical and mathematical sciences. In each instance, the data presumed to be available consists of ordered gradings, not measurements. The four specific areas of application are injury severity in road accidents, the perception of abnormalities on X-rays and similar photographs, the prediction of risk of inherited disease, and generalisations of probit analysis. It is hoped that giving these examples of the application of the bivariate normal distritution will facilitate the wider use of such models. |
