The search for hydrocarbon reserves is characterized by the elements of risk and uncertainty. Petroleum exploration is inherently probabilistic, yet, because exploration geologists are largely unfamiliar with formal methodologies and because few convincing probabilistic applications may be cited, statistical techniques have not been widely used. Mathematical procedures employed routinely in geological and geophysical analyses seldom treat probabilistic aspects clearly related to problems of estima-tion. Although the industry possesses awesome computing power and vast quantities of data, these resources are devoted primarily to contouring subsurface structural horizons and interpreting petrophysical properties. Petroleum exploration includes two major activities, regional resource assessment and prospect appraisal, both of which can benefit from the application of formal statistical techniques. The enormous cost of exploration in the remaining untested areas of potential oil production--in deep offshore waters--makes the specification of risk factors, conditional relationships, and probability distributions a critial concern of the petroleum explorationist and should lead to the use of more rigorous statistical procedures for his assessments and decisions. |
