Stein's two sample approach is extended here to obtain two stage analogues of Tukey's T and Sheffe's S methods of multiple comparisons under conditions of variance heterogeneity in a one way layout. The two stage T-method is based on the distribution of the range of i.i.d. Student t variables. Several graphs are provided for the upper tail of that distribution. The two stage S-method uses the distribution of a quadratic form in such variables. The critical values for this procedure are approximated by standard techniques and a table is provided. A numerical example is given for illustrating the new procedures. |
