A nonparametric test based on Hoeffding's (1948) U-statistic is presented for testing exponentiality against monotone failure rate. The test is shown to be unbiased and consistent with asymptotically normal test statistic. Examples are given where the test is shown to perform well against other tests for the monotonicity of failure rate functions, and against Hollander and Proschan's (1972) test for new better than used. |
