We show that, under mild conditions on h(ยท), E(h(X)|X > y) characterizes the distribution function of X, and exhibit a method of obtaining the distribution whenever E{h(X)|x > y} is known, in the continuous and in the discrete case. The results of Shanbhag (1970) and Hamdan (1972) follow immediately. |
