This paper deals with the statistic U(p) (a constant times Hotelling's [image omitted] in connection with (A) testing [image omitted] in [image omitted] (B) MANOVA and (C) testing canonical correlations. The distribution of U(p) is derived for p = 3 and p = 4 in the central case and for p = 3 in the non-central case. Using these results, the criterion U(3) is studied (for a specific value of one of the degrees of freedom) based on the power tabulations in view of (A), (B) and (C). Comparisons between the powers of the criterion U(p) and the largest root are also carried out. In addition, the form of the distribution of U(p) suggested by Pillai is studied and some tabulations of upper percentage points and powers are carried out. |
