Butler (1969) adapted the two-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic to obtain a single sample statistic for testing the hypothesis of symmetry about zero, and Chatterjee and Sen (1973) found that the test is more efficient than the sign test. In a manner analogous to Butler's work, the two-sample tests of Kuiper (1960) and Littell (1972), which are often more efficient than the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, are adapted to test for symmetry. It is found that the adaption of Kuiper's test is always more efficient than Butler's test, and that the adaption of the test of Littell is more efficient than either of the other adaptions in certain cases. |
