The Stagewise Intersection Protected Method (SIPM) is proposed for testing orthogonal contrasts, whereby experimentwise Type I error is controlled by setting to α the joint probability of observed omnibus and contrast test statistics exceeding their respective critical values. In an illustrative Monte Carlo experiment involving orthogonal contrasts across k=5 groups, the SIPM was more powerful than other current alternatives when three or four contrasts contained treatment effects. When fewer true effects were present SIPM was nearly as powerful as the other sequential procedures. |
