Contents: This paper deals with simultaneously estimating the trends in future growth of population and households. For this purpose, methods such as household to population ratio, age-specific headship rate, and household composition matrix have been applied, subject to certain assumptions. The system under consideration has been assumed open to migration. The consistencies of projections obtained and the methods employed have also been discussed using the observed data from two sample surveys conducted in the rural areas of northern India over a period of thirteen years. The unit of measurement used is a household. The estimates of population size and the number of households indicate that, of the three methods used, the household composition matrix method is a relatively more consistent one.
