This paper examines Fisher's example of the Nile problem as well as his example of a bivariate normal model which he uses to illustrate the method of making inference on an unknown parameter from the maximum likelihood estimator conditional on an ancillary statistic. It is seen that the result obtained by Fisher can be easily achieved by Fraser's structural method which depends neither on the conception of ancillarity nor on the maximum likelihood estimator. The same conclusion is reached on obtaining conditional confidence intervals for the parameters of location models. |
