A simple colorimetric method of determining nitrilotriacetate (NTA) in soils is described. The soil sample is extracted by treatments with 0.025M NaOH and CaCl2 solution, and the extract is analyzed for NTA by measurement of the absorbance at 620 tun of the blue color obtained when an aliquot is treated with borate buffer (pH 9.2), zinc sulfate, and 2-carboxy-2'-hydroxy-5'-sulfoformazylbenzene (Zincon) after removal of interfering cations by a resin treatment (Na+ Dowex 50). The method gives quantitative recovery of NTA added to soils. |
