Inhoud: Leaching experiments with a Cecil sandy loam profile were conducted during 11 weeks with and without sewage sludge application to determine mobilization of Ca, Mg and K and their activity in the soil solution in relation to plant growth. The results indicated that Mg and Ca concentrations were increased in the soil solution by sewage sludge application, without altering appreciably the K/√ (Ca+Mg) activity ratio. However, this ratio was observed to decrease by growing Coastal bermudagrass during the initial period of the leaching process, but balanced up again at the end of the 11th week. The Q/l relationship exhibited a regression line, which was less curved in the lower part, when soil was treated with sludge. The deeper curvature of the Q/l relation in the non-treated soil was attributed to K-fixation by wedge-effect of weathered mica present in the Cecil soil. The chelating ligands produced by microbial decomposition of sewage sludge were assumed to have a competing action for K against fixation, balancing in this way the K/√ (Ca + Mg) activity ratio by increasing the concentration of K in the soil solution.
