Inhoud: Metals can cause an interference with the cadmium reduction determination of nitrate (NO3). This study was conducted to compare ethylenedinitrilotetraacetic acid (EDTA) and diethylenetrinitrilopentaacetic acid (DTPA) as to their effectiveness in reducing metal interference with the cadmium reduction of NO3. Soil NO3 was extracted with the Bray P1 extract and spiked with NO3. Metals [iron as Fe+3, manganese as Mn+2, copper as Cu+2, and zinc as Zn+2] were added at rates of 0, 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 ppm to a NO3 standard. Nitrate spike recoveries ranged from 87 to 99% with EDTA and 98 to 100% with DTPA. When EDTA was used, NO3 spike recoveries were significantly correlated (r = 0.67) with extract Fe concentration. Regardless of chelate used, Zn, Mn, and Cu did not cause interference with the cadmium reduction of NO3. When EDTA was used, NO3 recovery was 94% at 50 ppm Fe, 91% at 100 ppm Fe, 78% at 200 ppm Fe, 50% at 400 ppm Fe, and 33% at 800 ppm Fe. Nitrate recovery was un-afffected by Fe when DTPA was used. In terms of reducing metal interference with the cadmium reduction determination of NO3, DTPA was a superior chelate in comparison to EDTA.
