Inhoud: Hot 0.01M CaCl2 extraction followed by inductively coupled plasma atomic-emission spectrometric (ICP-AES) analysis of soil boron was carried out on a number of soils and compared with hot water extraction and curcumin colorimetric analysis. There were only minor differences between extractable boron determined by the two methods. Some factors affecting the amount of boron extracted by CaCl2 we're investigated. It was found that varying boiling times between 5 and 15 minutes had no significant effect (P ≤ 0.05) on boron extracted. Filtration of the extract while still hot rather than after cooling gave higher boron concentrations in solution. All filtered 0.01M CaCl2 extracts were free of colloidal matter and almost colourless. The ICP-AES analysis procedure was found to be free of interferences from Ca, Mg, K, Na, Mn, Si and Fe at levels normally obtained in soil extracts. Precision of hot 0.01M CaCl2 extraction followed by ICP-AES analysis was estimated at ± 15.7%.
