In 1843, while still unknown and in the isolated capital city of Indiana, Henry Ward Beecher delivered a lecture on the sinfulness of the theatre. This article describes the theatrical ventures of early Indianapolis and the reactions of “responsible” citizens to such play-acting and analyzes Beecher's scathing lecture of criticism, showing how it played a role in projecting him as a figure of national pominence. |
