While we may or may not agree with the analysis of the human predicament as expressed by the recent votaries of existentialist philosophy, we cannot afford to ignore the implications of such a philosophy for speech. The author argues that the existentialists must not be seen as merely “anti-intellectuals” or as a threat to communication as a social and academic discipline. Rather the existentialists emphasize the importance of decision-making in everyday existence, challenging us to adapt our teaching, research, and criticism, to provide for man's individual and social communication needs. |
