Beecher was the greatest preacher of the 19th century as Fosdick is of the 20th. Beecher broke with Calvinism and Fosdick continued the cleavage. Both men were not ashamed to admit the part formal training in public speaking played in their pulpit success. It is stimulating to point out the likenesses and unlikenesses in these two great preachers. For example, Beecher preached to the common people whereas Fosdick preached to the intelligentsia. |
