Inhoud: This study explores how ethnic identity influences communication expectations among Asian Americans. The results of this study indicate two ethnic identity dimensions: ethnic pride and ethnic exclusivity. Ethnic exclusivity interacted with the ethnicity of potential dating partners to influence relational expectations. Overall, the findings indicate that ethnic exclusivity affects ingroup and outgroup dating expectations. The data suggest that high ethnic exclusive individuals tend to perceive more trust, intimacy, and receptivity and less arousal (i.e., anxiety) among potential dating partners within their own ethnic group than potential white dating partners. In addition, high ethnic exclusive individuals tend to perceive less intergroup distance among potential Asian dating partners than potential white dating partners. However, ethnic pride did not influence relational expectations. Implications of the results on Asian American dating patterns are also discussed.
