The effect of interest on recall: An experiment

Title: The effect of interest on recall: An experiment
Author: Weber, Keith
Corrigan, Michael
Fornash, Bennie
Neupauer, Nicholas C.
Appeared in: Communication research reports
Paging: Volume 20 (2003) nr. 2 pages 116-123
Year: 2003
Contents: An experiment was conducted in an attempt to test the relationship between teacher lecture material, student interest and cognitive learning. Interest was manipulated in two videotapes through character identification. Character identification is one of the attributes suggested by Anderson, Shirey, Wilson and Fielding (1987) that could serve to increase student interest. Analyses indicate that the group viewing the video with easily identifiable characters scored higher on recall tests of lecture material. Additionally, it appears as if this increase was also related to an increase in the competence and meaningfulness dimensions of student interest.
