Secret test use and self-esteem in deteriorating relationships

Titel: Secret test use and self-esteem in deteriorating relationships

Inhoud: The present study extends Baxter and Wilmot's (1984) research on secret tests (strategies used to acquire information about interpersonal relationships) in romantic potential relationships to deteriorating romantic relationships, and it examines self-esteem's role in this information seeking process. It was hypothesized that deteriorating relationships would involve more secret tests than stable relationships due to higher levels of uncertainty associated with transitional relationships, and that self-esteem and secret test use would be negatively related. The hypotheses were supported for rule deviation tests (strategies that conflict with common relationship norms), but not for overt action tests (strategies involving direct communication with the partner or in the partner's presence). After accounting for the effects of self-esteem, sex, relationship length, and desire for relationship disengagement on secret test use, desire for relationship disengagement was more strongly associated with both types of secret tests than was relationship type.
