Inhoud: Using a stratified probability sample of 593 senior citizens residing in the Youngstown, Ohio, this study investigated the correlates of perceptions of favorable and negative general stereotypes in television content. Large percentages of the elderly perceived that they were portrayed in a neutral or favorable way in comparison to younger persons. Exposure to television programming was a statistically significant predictor of favorable rather than unfavorable perceptions of stereotypes. Regression analysis provided evidence that perception of negative content was associated with contextual aging as indicated by such variables as social interaction with others, status of health, and living alone, but not with chronological age. We speculate that exposure to TV per se is not as important as contextual aging in explaining perception of unfavorable stereotyping among the elderly.
