This essay analyzed the rhetorical dilemma faced by female antisuffrage speakers. Specifically, they had to choose between speaking in public and violating their moral code of proper behavior or remaining silent and acquiescing to the enfranchisement of women. Arguments from nineteenth century social doctrine influenced the antisuffragists' response to the exigence of female suffrage and shaped their persuasive strategies. The antisuffragists resolved their dilemma by pragmatically justifying increased political activity, including public speaking. |
