This study shows that hiring decisions in a natural setting are affected by the temperament similarity of interviewer and applicant. This supports Keirsey's hypothesis that temperament similarity affects compatibility (Keirsey & Bates, 1976), and suggests that temperament information is exchanged by communication partners even in relatively brief and structured encounters. These results suggest that general personality and temperament may be an influential variable upon a number of commonly investigated communication constructs, and suggest the need to discover the bases of personality attribution in interpersonal and other communication contexts. |
