The ability of senior citizens to structure and deliver real life stories in an educational yet entertaining manner for elementary school children was of critical importance to the success of an applied intergenerational developmental project. Recognizing the importance of collaboration in the elder adult learning process, a consensual instructional communication strategy was employed to develop the storytelling skills of senior citizens. Elders were videotaped telling real-life stories prior to and following four weeks of instruction. The behaviors and attitudes of the elders during instructional sessions, and the final reactions of the children, teachers, administrators, and elders, all provide evidence of a successful intergenerational project. The consensual instructional strategy was felt to have played a major role by all involved. Both observational and data-based comparisons of performances prior to and following instruction indicated significant positive improvements in performance content, delivery, and energy. Additional applied research of a more expansive nature is suggested.
