Interaction analysis and phase mapping techniques were used to create phase maps for eight authentic and eight simulated hostage negotiations. Optimal matching distances of each map from a map based on Gulliver's phase model of negotiated disputes revealed variation in resemblance to the model. A dissimilarity matrix generated by optimal matching comparison of all possible pairs of maps in the sample was subjected to multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis. A family of Gulliver-like cases (mostly simulations) emerged from the analysis; other cases resembled neither each other nor the Gulliver model. |
