In recent years in teacher education, an impetus has been developing which suggests that in all teacher preparation there should be focus on the importance of oral communication competencies, and that the teacher in training should be asked to demonstrate them in clinical and field-based experiences. This paper describes a cooperative approach by the Departments of Education and Communication at Miami University (Ohio), designed to produce a field-based classroom communication course. The course is a core requirement for all students in certification programs. The conceptual framework is based on certain findings of the SCA National Project on Speech Communication Competencies, using especially the notion that communication options should be studied within the overall framework of communication functions. |
