Given the “tight” job market for advanced-degree graduates, the prospect of a career as a “communication consultant” is attracting an increasing number of aspirants. This essay argues that (1) consulting is indeed an appropriate nonacademic career option for some advanced-degree graduates in communication, but (2) such a career, if pursued competently and responsibly, requires very special, as well as rigorous, preparation. |
