Several metallic compounds, when mixed with fuel, are known to successfully inhibit soot formation during combustion. The mechanisms underlying the action of some of these additives have been identified and are discussed here. Essentially, the additives promote soot oxidation within the flame and so can be considered smoke inhibiters rather than compounds which inhibit the formation of soot precursors. |
