The low temperature slow combustion of acetone has been investigated, in a static system, particular attention being paid to the relationship between slow combustion and cool flames. Self-heating occurred, temperature rises of about 10 °C at the centre of the reactor being observed in the slow reaction below the cool flame limit. Much larger temperature rises were observed in the cool flames. Detailed examination of the reaction on both sides of the limit showed that there was no significant difference in the main processes taking place in. the two regions. A connection between cool flames and the region of negative temperature coefficient of the rate was demonstrated. The results of this study are discussed in terms of the recent unified theory of chain and thermal explosions. |
