Inhoud: Introduction : This study examined whether selection for association is disturbed in chronic schizophrenic patients. Methods : Participants learned to rate the extent to which cues and outcomes were related in a probabilistic classification task in which the relative validity of the target cue was the key variable that was changed from low context validity to high context validity. Results : Normal subjects' responses to the relative invalid target cue were attenuated compared to that seen if the target cue had been the only valid stimulus. Chronic schizophrenic patients' responses to the relative invalid target cue were augmented compared to the responses to the relative valid target. Conclusions : A configural theory of associative learning which postulates disturbed retrieval from long-term memory in schizophrenia is particularly well suited to understanding the mechanisms that might lead to nonselective learning.
