Inhoud: Shallice, Burgess, Schon, and Baxter (1989) improved Lhermitte's (1983) methodology for eliciting utilisation behaviour. They also attempted to specify stimulus triggers more likely to elicit utilisation behaviour but apparently overlooked personal relevance of stimuli as a contributing factor. We provide preliminary support for the notion that the power of stimuli to evoke utilisation behaviour is variable and depends on the individual's prior experience with such stimuli. Selective attention to stimuli suggests some revision of Lhermitte's neuroanatomical explanation for utilisation behaviour. A model that emphasises cognitive-motor programmes and attentional systems also incorporates the possibility of modifying utilisation behaviours. There are implications for clinical intervention as some utilisation behaviour may be high risk, and attempts to modify stimulus triggers or consequent behaviour will be required. Prior knowledge of key stimulus triggers for a particular individual would assist with planning intervention strategies and with overall management for maximum quality of life.
