Twenty-three named emotions were rated retrospectively by 28 male and 26 female psychology students with respect to 21 self-experienced perceived bodily reactions. Orthogonal factor analysis of the correlations among the scales yielded four factors: general arousal, sadness reactions, specific arousal with two types of arousal differentiated, and goose pimples and temporary shiver. The same general factor structure was obtained for males and females, although the arousal factors were apparently more salient for the males and the sadness reactions factor more salient for the females. The validity of the findings was discussed in terms of beliefs, memories, direct perceptions and actual reactions. Implications for emotion theory were also discussed, and suggestions for future research were proposed. |
