Group therapy with metastatic cancer patients

Title: Group therapy with metastatic cancer patients
Author: Edelman, Sarah
Appeared in: Clinical psychologist
Paging: Volume 3 (1999) nr. 2 pages 35-40
Year: 1999
Contents: Since the 1970s group interventions have become a common means for the delivery of psycho-therapy for individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer. Patients who have metastatic (secondary) cancer are at particularly high risk of psychological disturbance because of poor prognosis and aversive physical symptoms which frequently accompany disease progression. This paper reviews the findings of studies which evaluated group interventions with patients who have metastatic cancer. To date, two studies have found significant reductions in distress amongst patients with metastatic disease who attended group interventions. One of these used a supportive-expressive model, while the otherused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). The outcome of the two studies is compared, and some difficulties associated with group interventions with this patient cohort are discussed.
