An idea of clearance of respiratory bronchioles as a result of continuous flow of extracellular liquid layer generated by the gradient of the surface tension is presented. This gradient is due to nonhomogeneities in the distribution of the surface-active substances produced by type II pneumocytes in the alveoli. The mathematical model which describes the flow of the hypophase has been formulated and numerically examined for some values of viscosity and density of the lining layer and of differences in the surface concentration of surfactant between the bronchiole edges. The results show a strong dependence of the clearance rate on these differences and hypophase viscosity and very weak effect of the gravity forces. |
