Though the Langmuir -Hinshelwood theory has served well in the characterization of heterogeneous catalytic reactions for 50 years, it appears that in many instances it may represent an oversimplification of the phenomena involved. It is difficult to obtain extremely accurate kinetic data and the advent of modeling techniques utilizing high-speed computers has often shown the empirical nature of the resulting correlating equations. Thus, a recent study attempts by computer screen to select one out of a total of some 75 proposed Langmuir-Hinshelwood models. One is left with the uneasy feeling that the selected model in such cases may not always be the best. |
